Hey guys, Gatlin here from Carphonix.
One of the questions I get all the time is, is it worth it to hire a car electronics installer? Can’t you just get your new car stereo or remote car starter system installed yourself?
And the answer is, it depends.
If you want to treat your car like a science project and tinker around with things and learn about how car electronics works then yeah, go for it! That was me when I was a teenager – I used to love tinkering with my first car. It’s how I got into the car electronics business in the first place. I’ll never tell someone that’s a bad idea.
Some customers have even come into the shop with set ups they made themselves and they blew me away! One time a guy came in with a full computer installed in his dashboard, back in 2013. He set it all up himself. Some of the wiring was a little sloppy, but hey it’s his project. I love seeing when people try their own stuff.
But if you want to get good results, you get what you pay for.
I worked on a 2006 Nissan X-Trail recently. A customer came in telling me her Alpine speakers didn’t work. They weren’t that old – she had them installed recently from Best Buy – and she wasn’t that happy with the sound quality anyway so she asked us to replace the speakers.
So we opened up the door, and what did we find? You’ll have to watch the video to find out…

If you’re considering upgrading the audio or electronics in your vehicle, make sure to speak with someone who knows what they’re doing.
